University of Maryland, College Park, researchers have developed a technique to detect material in cargo that could be used in "dirty bombs." Ionization surrounding crates is a sign of radioactive material; if authorities can detect this, they can designate select containers for inspection. The concept is described in an article in the Journal of Applied Physics by Victor Granatstein, a professor in the A. James Clark School of Engineering's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics, and Gregory Nusinovich, an institute scientist. The Office of Naval Research supports their work under a five-year grant.
