A Houston-based company exploring "clean coal" technology will use a $1.3 million state grant to build a demonstration plant in Harmar.
Accelergy Corp. will build the facility over two years at a total cost of about $5.5 million at the University of Pittsburgh Applied Research Center, a business incubator in the former Gulf Research site along Gulf Lab Road. Officials said that when the plant is fully functioning, it will gasify algae mixed with coal or coal waste into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. They said carbon dioxide created in the process will be recycled and algae used in the process will produce additional fuels and fertilizer.
