Sift through the silicon and it becomes apparent: The high-end computer chip landscape is changing dramatically. It used to be that if you wanted to make anything from a factory automation platform to a car's entertainment system, you probably would choose to make an upfront investment of $35 million to $40 million and get it done by a company that makes application- specific integrated circuits, or ASICs. Then if it worked, you'd mass-produce it at a cost of about 50 cents a chip.
Interview with LSI Logic CEO Wilfred J. Corrigan - Cover Story - Interview LSI Logic Chmn. and CEO Wilfred J. Corrigan sees a future where people can access the Internet without being PC-based. He argues that the time is coming when the clutter created by the number of separate set-top boxes needed for satellites, cable television, digital video disk and Internet access device will no longer be tolerated and people will start looking for a solution that combines all of these functions in one chip. LSI is in the business of manufacturing customized chips known as application-specific integrated circuits which are intended for highly complex and specific functions. Corrigan contends that LSI is geared up to manufacture the chip that would eliminate the need for PCs in accessing the Inter...
Military communications are changing quickly with specialized radio systems being developed that operate in the spectrum between DC and lightwave. Performance and price improvements in high-frequency and low-band very-high-frequency are being made in the market. Analog circuits are being replaced or augmented by digital circuits, contributing to the new capabilities such as better performance. The digital revolution includes computer and digital-signal processing chips, and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). High-speed data, facsimile and video are being augmented by traditional voice and low-speed data.
