By E. Kyle Minor NEW HAVEN -- Is it any wonder that A.R. Gurney chose to write about a man and his dog when writing a romantic comedy about unconditional love? The title character of his 1995 play "Sylvia," after all, hangs on every syllable that her master utters. That chemistry between canine and human is wonderfully palpable in Long Wharf Theatre's overdue production of "Sylvia.
Director Eric Ting knew on which side his bread was buttered when he cast Erica Sullivan as the lovable mutt in his production, which continues through March 14 on the Mainstage. Sullivan is eminently cute and cuddly and blessed with a generous sense of comic timing.

With every other TV show dramatizing crime scene investigation, is it any wonder that jurors are gleefully ignoring trial judges by conducting their own forensic experiments?
That's exactly what happened not too long ago in the Yolo County Superior Court in California.

Though I've oft derided McSweeney's as an annoying literary phenom responsible for inspiring offences like Decemberists lyrics, I recently picked up the first in the publishing house's Voice of Witness series, which offers, in Studs Terkelian fashion, oral histories from people who don't normally get a chance to share their narratives.
Then there's Calvin Willis, who spent 22 years in Louisiana's Angola Prison, having been convicted of raping a little girl. If it weren't for the help of a paralegal--who raised money for the DNA test that exonerated him--Willis would still be in jail today.
What's surprising about the book isn't that McSweeney's managed to find so many of these people; it's that they didn't include more. After reading Surviving Justice, you realize how easily wrongful im...

For some high school is a time to remember good times with good friends. For others, it was a time to forget, fraught with adolescent awkwardness.
Is it any wonder that high school reunions evoke a range of emotions from excitement to dread and enthusiasm to apathy?

EVER since some cookie dough found its way into the Equal Rights Advocates' office in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago, Ingrid Tischer's focus has foundered.
Around 3:30 each afternoon, a voice comes over the public- interest law firm's intercom to announce that the cookies are ready. "It's the voice of every nonwork-related thought you've ever had," Tischer says. "How can you possibly say that a hot chocolate-chip cookie is less compelling than a grant report?

IS IT ANY WONDER that we are facing an economic disaster from the way Congress behaves? Consider a recent series of events. House Republicans passed a continuing resolution to provide emergency funding to FEMA for relief to those suffering from recent natural disasters.

Pat Hurst hobbled into the LPGA Championship with the past- performance chart of a low-priced claimer nearing the end of its career. She had missed the cut in four straight tournaments, shooting a round of 75 or worse in all of them. She hasn't scored an LPGA victory since 2009, hasn't won in the states since 2006. If you considered her a serious contender at Locust Hill this week then you're either her husband or one of their two children.
On a tour where it seems everyone is a face of the future, Hurst, 42, is most definitely a ghost from the past. She was LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1995, won a major in 1998 and celebrated with the birth of her son the following year. And that's when it all began to change. Jack Nicklaus always said golf would get tougher for Tiger Woods onc...
