Antoine Deneriaz, a 29-year-old Frenchman, conquered the men's downhill course Sunday, skiing from 30th position to the gold- medal stand to capture the premier Alpine event of the Turin Olympics in stirring fashion. Silver medalist Michael Walchhofer of Austria appeared poised for gold until Deneriaz, the last starter among the top 30 skiers, sped down the course in 1 minute, 48.8 seconds, .72 ahead of Walchhofer and 1.02 ahead of bronze medalist Bruno Kernen of Switzerland.

  • SESTRIERE, Italy -- On a day when American expectations collided with a Frenchman no one saw coming, the United States was left out of the medals entirely in the Olympic downhill held here Sunday. Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves, both among the pre-race favorites, finished fifth and 10th, respectively, while fellow Americans Scott Macartney and Utahn Steven Nyman were 15th and 19th, respectively.
