Anytime is a good time to visit the Caribbean Island of Antigua & Barbuda. But there is no better time to be on the island that during the 10-days of carnival every year. Antigua carnival is celebrated on the first Monday and Tuesday in August which is the actual time that slavery was abolished on the island in 1834. According to the history of the island, on August 1st as the news of the abolition of slavery reached the masses, people celebrated with the spontaneous reaction of taking to the streets. They expressed their new found freedom with joy, merriment, dancing and singing. This informal celebration was the forerunner of the modern day Antigua carnival which was first organized in 1957.
