This summer is a season of preparation, anticipation and anxiety over the closing or proposed closing of three of the five Catholic churches in Lockport. Most of the anxiety is focused on St. Mary's Church at 5 Saxton St., which was supposed to have merged with three other congregations to become the newly named All Saints Parish. St. Mary's was to have been closed.

A semi-structured focus group prompted interaction among 23 human service undergraduates prior to a unique service-learning experience that involved completing a horticultural project and case management tasks with at-risk youth living in a locked psychiatric residential treatment center. The focus group provided an opportunity for university students to voice expectations and concerns, clarify roles, and build cohesion prior to beginning the project.
