  • FRIDAY, JANUARY 30: NUTTY ANSWERING MACHINE MESSAGES Profile America -- Friday, Jan. 30. This is a day when it's okay to unload at one of the pet gripes of many people it's Inane Answering Machine Message Day. The goal is to rid the world of obnoxious messages found on a lot of telephone answering machines. Life today has many time demands, and many feel the need to make every minute of the day count. They simply want to leave messages quickly and get back to business and feel frustrated when they hear messages such as: "Hello, the answering machine is broken, but I'm the refrigerator. If you'll give me your message, I'll put it on my door." And we do make a lot of calls. Every day in the U.S., we dial 1.5-billion local calls and nearly 300-million long distance calls. You can f...

  • This column usually isn't much for trend-spotting. I'm happy to be at the back end of the curve. Then this guy called when I wasn't here and left a message. It gave me the idea.

  • Boy, would my life be better if the words out of my mouth could be "held" for a few seconds for instant review, instead of being instantaneously available to the listening audience. Not to delete my obscenities, but rather because of the trouble that comes from "blurting." Just off the top of my head, some of the things that could've been averted with a slight delay: close family members wouldn't think I thought they were a "controlling maniac"; a (now) ex-boss wouldn't know I thought he was a "no-talent hack"; 95 percent of my lame "pickup" lines would remain unheard; telemarketers and creditors wouldn't have been told that the person they wanted to speak to was indeed me; the burly guy in the Hummer wouldn't have been sorely vexed by my characterization of his driving; secrets I was t...

  • Stephen Smith was so happy with GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe's health- reform vote that he stood on the steps of his Deering Street home Tuesday night and wrote her a letter. Smith, a 62-year-old Web publisher, followed the letter up with a telephone call to Snowe's Auburn headquarters complimenting her decision - he could not get through to her Washington, D.C., offices because the answering machine was filled with messages.

  • Many years ago, I wrote an article for this column criticizing the general lack of manners and courtesy exhibited by the public. Nary a please, thank you or may I help you was to be heard. It seemed more and more people -- except perhaps Miss Manners -- found those pleasantries archaic and outdated. Horns honked, fingers waved, vulgarities spewed; rudeness and disrespect ruled the land. After the column was printed, it was apparent I'd hit a nerve because we received many messages on our answering machine from people voicing their agreement. Well, much has changed since that column appeared. Life throws you many surprises -- some good and some bad -- that have a way of shaking up your world and changing your perceptions. Two years ago I suffered a back injury. While thankfully no...

  • The answering machine messages are vague: Someone named Heidi leaves a number and tells you to call back. Another call from Alex, same number. And one from Brandy. You call, and Jennifer says she's with CBE Group and has an important "business matter" to discuss. But first you must confirm your address and Social Security number.
