They say a baseball umpire is doing a good job if nobody notices him. But the arbiters working a Norfolk Tides game this week gave new meaning to the concept of anonymity.
No names, please, the men requested while changing into their work clothes in a small room underneath Harbor Park.

VIENNA, Austria - The U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said in a report Tuesday that Iran obtained documents and drawings on the black market that serve no other purpose than to make an atomic warhead. Tehran warned of an "end of diplomacy if plans to refer it to the U.N. Security Council are carried out.The report by the agency, ahead of a meeting of its 35-member board Thursday, also confirmed information recently provided by diplomats that Tehran has not started small-scale uranium enrichment since announcing it would earlier this month.Nevertheless, the findings added to pressure to refer Tehran to the Security Council within days. Such a move, Iran said, would lead to a halt in surprise U.N. inspections beginning Saturday and prompt it to resume frozen nuclear activities."If it happens...

This study examines board of director anonymity in the CEO performance evaluation process. Two hundred and one top executive compensation officers of the American Compensation Association responded to a survey that asked them several question about their firm practices regarding the CEO evaluation process. A priori, we felt that anonymity would be used as a tool by powerful CEOs in order to ensure positive ratings. Upward appraisal research shows that managers are rated higher by subordinates when the process is not anonymous. Our results show that the more influential a CEO is in his/her respective firm, the less anonymous the performance ratings reported by the top executive compensation officer. When the CEO is not influential, the performance evaluations tend to be anonymous.

WASHINGTON - Four years after a retired FBI agent mysteriously vanished inside Iran, U.S. officials have received irrefutable proof he is alive, a dramatic development that has sharply intensified secret negotiations to bring him home, The Associated Press has learned. The U.S. had lacked reliable information about whether Robert Levinson was alive or dead since he disappeared in March 2007 from the Iranian island of Kish. It remains unclear who exactly is holding Levinson or where he is, but the proof that he is alive is a hopeful sign in a case that had seemingly gone cold. The State Department issued a three-sentence statement by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton Thursday saying there were indications Levinson was in southwest Asia and asking Iran for help. The AP has learned...

Would our political system be worse off if people in situations like mine stopped contributing to avoid disclosure, or is that precisely the decision to which citizens who wish to participate in politics ought to be put? The number of international students pursuing secondary education at United States (U.S.) universities has been increasing over the past 25 years, and is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. However, these students have a plethora of choices among universities in the U.S. and foreign countries. Universities must distinguish themselves if they hope to obtain the most desirable students from around the world. Previous research by Agarwal and Winkler (1985), Lee and Tan (1984), Mazzarol and Soutar (2002), and McMahon (1992) has identified a number of factors that influence the choice of educational programs. This paper builds on existing research by re-examining some of those factors combined with additional factors and by examining the role of accreditation by The Association...

While we learned in last week's column that President Bush says he's acting on orders from God-a la Moses at the burning bush-in attacking Afghanistan and Iraq, a groundswell of criticisms both foreign and domestic contend that "B.U.S.H." really is an acronym meaning: "Bringing United States Hell." For example, one world leader, North Korea's Kim Jong-Il, expressed his lack of confidence in the President's ability to lead the world's greatest nation when he referred to him a "fascist tyrant," and, well, "human trash." And President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela heartily agrees with the translation of "B.U.S.H." After reportedly calling Mr. Bush a "donkey," "drunkard," and "alcoholic" (though not necessarily in that order) as per a March 19, 2006, Reuters news agency story, what he had to say...

Plamegate is rich with symptoms of the journalistic malignancy [Stone] diagnosed. Most obvious among them is Times reporter [Judy Miller], whose blind acceptance of lies about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction from sources such as [Bush, Cheney] handmaiden I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is unforgettable. Miller's ill-founded front-page stories "were deeply flawed, highly partisan and often wrong," [Norman Pearlstine Farrar] writes, joining a chorus of harsh critics. So when Miller, counseled by [Lloyd Abrams], played Joan of Arc in an orange jumpsuit rather than reveal Libby as a source, even some media First Amendment absolutists winced. Libby and Karl Rove peddled the [Valerie Plame] leak everywhere. Pearlstine argues that half a dozen media heavyweights who obtained waivers of confidential...
