Anthony and Carmela Cartone
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Cartone of Williamsville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a renewal of marriage vows in St. John Neumann Chapel, Town of Tonawanda, followed by a luncheon hosted by their children in Falletta's Restaurant, Clarence. Mr. Cartone and Carmela Lazzaro were married April 29, 1961, in St. Margaret Catholic Church, Buffalo. He is a retired quality control inspector for Westinghouse Electric and Bell Aerospace Textron; she is a retired histology technician for IMMCO Diagnostics. The couple has four children, 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Before an investment group led by Bangor native Richard L. Connor bought them, the Maine media holdings of The Seattle Times Co. were on the verge of bankruptcy. Two years later, MaineToday Media is financially stable, has improved quality at all of its properties, strengthened news coverage of issues relevant to Maine readers and has grown its online and digital media business.

Leonard and Connie Flathers of Yakima celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a cruise to Alaska. They will also celebrate their anniversary during a family camping trip.

The Kupfers and the Wienses have once again celebrated their wedding anniversaries together - for the 53rd consecutive year.
This year, on June 18, Terry and Sharon Kupfer and Bob and Marion Wiens were not going to Hawaii or Europe or Canada, where they have celebrated in other years. Since the Wienses are fairly new residents of Plymouth Village retirement community and the Kupfers have been making plans to move there, they chose the elegant Victorian setting of Plymouth Village's Kendall House on East Palm Avenue to celebrate this year.

On Feb. 12, the NAACP marked its 100th anniversary. The NAACP Headquarters, based in Baltimore, along with its 1,700 units nationwide", will host celebrations and observances throughout the year ending with the 2010 annual convention. In this year of "change," it's important to remember that the NAACP has been the vanguard leader of social change in America for all of its 100 years.

Anthony and Nancy Markello - 55 years
Dr. and Mrs. Anthony Markello of East Aurora celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with family at Roycroft Inn. The couple's son, Jeffrey Markello, Aurora Town justice, presided over their renewal of marriage vows. Mr. Markello and Nancy Hammond were married Oct. 29, 1955, in First Congregational Church, North Collins. He continues to work part time as an associate medical director for Independent Health and serves on the boards of several professional organizations; she is a retired nurse. The couple has three children, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
