When Charlotte Fletcher emailed me this photo of a coyote in her back yard in Princess Anne Hills, I wrote back and told her I thought it was a gray fox.
It was hard for me to believe a coyote was living at the North End of Virginia Beach! Thank goodness Fletcher challenged me, because I sent the photo off to Erik Molleen, district resource specialist at First Landing State Park, and he confirmed Fletcher's photo was, indeed, a coyote!

In stores:
THE PROPOSAL (2009, Buena Vista, PG-13, $30) -- "Green Card" meets "The Devil Wears Prada" in a beguiling rom-com about a witchy book editor (Sandra Bullock) who browbeats her loyal assistant (Ryan Reynolds) into marrying her in hopes of avoiding deportation to Canada. To advance their fake courtship, the not-so-happy couple heads to his hometown in Alaska where she falls in love with him and his welcoming family (Betty White, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson). The premise is creaky but there's some fine banter and plenty of sizzle thanks to Reynolds and Bullock's irresistible chemistry. Extras: alt ending, deleted scenes, outtakes and commentary by director Anne Fletcher ("27 Dresses").

Writer Peter Chiarelli catalogs the expected developments as he brings [Margaret Tate] and [Andrew Paxton] inevitably closer together, while tossing in some familial angst with Andrew's estranged feelings toward his dad (Craig T. Nelson), providing a dash of maternal warmth (courtesy of Mary Steenburgen as Andrew's mom) and generating some Northern Exposure-style ambiance. To further up the sitcom ante, Chiarelli makes room for feisty senior moments with Golden Girl Betty White as Andrew's 90-years-young granny, while The Office's Oscar Nunez likewise steals scenes as Sitka's general store owner and part-time Chippendale.
Touchstone's DVD offers a letterboxed (2.35:1 ratio) image that preserves director of photography Oliver Stapleton's swanky widescreen visuals. The audio commentary tr...

For the first time in recent memory, we enjoyed a bushel of well- done films from female directors, as opposed to the usual token entries. Including, but not limited to: Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker," Anna Boden's (with Ryan Fleck) "Sugar," Jane Campion's "Bright Star," Cherien Dabis' "Amreeka," Claire Denis' "35 Shots of Rum," Nora Ephron's "Julie & Julia," Anne Fletcher's "The Proposal," Aviva Kempner's "Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg," Kim So Yong's "Treeless Mountain," Jennifer Lynch's "Surveillance," Lucrecia Martel's "The Headless Woman," Nancy Meyers' "It's Complicated," Lone Scherfig's "An Education" and Agnes Varda's "The Beaches of Agnes.
As for actresses, Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock were were far from the whole story - more like the tip of the iceberg, actually.
