Cheri Leasner, a parent volunteer at Old Mill Middle School North, was recently awarded the Volunteer of the Month for January by the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.
Leasner, a parent of an eighth-grader, has been volunteering at the school since the 2008 when she answered the call to participate in the struggling volunteer force. By 2009, she became the school's volunteer coordinator.

ANNAPOLIS - The field of candidates vying to be the student member of the Anne Arundel County Board of Education has been narrowed from nine to three.

Sixteen-year-old Collin Wojciechowski knows he will have to make sacrifices to serve on the Anne Arundel County Board of Education during his senior year but says he is glad to continue a 30-year tradition by filling the one seat open to a senior each year.
Anne Arundel is one of a few school districts nationwide that have a student with full voting privileges serving on the school board, though some boards have students in an advisory role. Like the other seven board members, the student representative is responsible for the district's $1 billion capital and operating budget.

With the deadline looming Monday, only two people have applied to fill a vacant County Council seat. Thomas Angelis, a former school teacher and unsuccessful candidate for county executive, and Michael McNelly, a retired police officer and former member of the Anne Arundel County Board of Education, have both submitted applications. County Administrator Judy Holmes said she is expecting about eight more applications by Monday.

The family of a Crofton teenager killed last year in what police believe to be a gang-related attack plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit Tuesday against the assailants and the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.
The parents of Christopher Jones are seeking $5 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages from each of the six people connected to the incident, as well as $200,000 from the school board, according to a copy of the complaint.

It was still dark and chilly out yesterday morning as a group of about 20 teachers headed out to street in front of Severna Park High School to hold picket signs.
With the word "Respect" printed on their signs, the teachers joined teachers at a handful of schools around the county that already have picketed to express frustration with an impasse in compensation negotiations between the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County and the county Board of Education.
