The decision to euthanize a kitten, cat, puppy or dog is not made lightly by the Humane League of Lancaster County, nor by any of the thousands of animal shelters around the country that find themselves overrun with healthy animals that cannot find a home. They all have limited space, money, food, litter and foster homes to access. Sometimes there isn't room for "one more.

This month begins what animal control officials call "kitten season," the summer months when thousands of newborn felines join the already burgeoning populations of cats at shelters across the county.

Stuffed to the rafters with furry creatures, area animal shelters are slashing adoption fees and holding special events this weekend in hopes of relieving the crowding.
The crush of animals has no rhyme or reason, said Bill Hutchison, communications director with the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society. With Labor Day weekend and the unofficial end of summer past, swimming pools and water parks are closing up until next spring. But before they drain the water and lock the gates, pools in Dormont, O'Hara and Munhall have partnered with local animal shelters to let pets take the season's last swim.
