  • During a ceremony Friday, right about the time checks were going to be handed out to a trio of nonprofits, one of the guests of honor made a little deposit of his own, right on the carpet. Everyone thought it was adorable - even the operators of the new thrift store where the ceremony was taking place. After all, it's hard to take offense at a puppy just doing what comes naturally, especially at a thrift store dedicated to raising money for dozens of animal rescue groups in El Paso County.

  • bsaunders@cnpapers.com 304-348-1738 Dogs, like humans, can have a difficult time learning to trust people after that trust has been broken. But the case of Wilson, a young Great Pyrenees, shows that dogs can rebound from a troubled life and make wonderful companions. Wilson was adopted last June by Teresa Tierno of Charlestons West Side. The dog now lives happily with Tierno and her two older female dogs. He is great. He gets them to play and has brought life back to them, Tierno said. But Wilsons story the part that is known starts before Teirno brought him home. Wilson was a homeless dog rescued by Little Victories Animal Rescue Group in Cabell County. Wilson lived at the Little Victories farm at Ona for a year and a half. He was a beautiful, healthy dog, but we thought we were neve...

  • As ordained pastors, Harry Mathewson and his wife, Debby, know well the words of Psalms 12:10: "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. Today , the couple and the organization they represent, the DeSoto Animal Rescue Society, will put scripture into action with the first A Furry Affair, a fundraiser for the nonprofit foster home group to be held at the Bonne Terre Country Inn and Restaurant.

The humanitarian needs remain overwhelming but given the important role that companion animals play in the Japanese family and the important role that livestock plays in the Japanese economy, it's important that we address the issues immediately," said IFAW's Disaster Manager Dr. Dick Green. "IFAW has reached out to local rescue groups, veterinary associations, and governmental agencies and is determining the best way to assist in the relief process.

  • Recently, I very sadly witnessed the pain and suffering of a dog that lay injured on the side of the road. I personally called 9-1-1 and was routed to a county animal rescue center that re-routed me to another call center, that routed me to another call center that didn't even service the area of the incident although I had specifically cited the city cross streets. It was apparent to me that the dog had once been someone's pet - the canine responded to the command "stay" each time he tried to stand on wobbly legs, and then collapsed. The injuries were severe. The dog was in anguish for 55 minutes and expired seconds before an animal rescue service arrived.
