During a ceremony Friday, right about the time checks were going to be handed out to a trio of nonprofits, one of the guests of honor made a little deposit of his own, right on the carpet. Everyone thought it was adorable - even the operators of the new thrift store where the ceremony was taking place. After all, it's hard to take offense at a puppy just doing what comes naturally, especially at a thrift store dedicated to raising money for dozens of animal rescue groups in El Paso County.

But the case of Wilson, a young Great Pyrenees, shows that dogs can rebound from a troubled life and make wonderful companions. Wilson was adopted last June by Teresa Tierno of Charlestons West Side. The dog now lives happily with Tierno and her two older female dogs. He is great. He gets them to play and has brought life back to them, Tierno said. Derry Township supervisors and firefighters combined efforts to save several pets from a burning home last week in New Derry. Recently, I very sadly witnessed the pain and suffering of a dog that lay injured on the side of the road. I personally called 9-1-1 and was routed to a county animal rescue center that re-routed me to another call center, that routed me to another call center that didn't even service the area of the incident although I had specifically cited the city cross streets. It was apparent to me that the dog had once been someone's pet - the canine responded to the command "stay" each time he tried to stand on wobbly legs, and then collapsed. The injuries were severe. The dog was in anguish for 55 minutes and expired seconds before an animal rescue service arrived.
