This study was to investigate how dietary pattern, food choice, food consumption, nutrient intake and body mass index (BMI) vary with length of residence for Korean American college students. The respondents were 60 Korean American residents living in the Los Angeles Area. They were divided into two groups based on the length of stay in the U.S.: low acculturated Korean Americans (LAK, n=23, average length of residency: 4.10±2.92 years) and high acculturated Korean Americans (HAK, n=37, average length of residency: 16.97±5.86 years). A food frequency questionnaire and one day food record were used and analyzed based on the levels of acculturation and of gender. Using the Food Guide Pyramid System, the results indicated the HAK had consumed more foods in the grain servings (5.89±3.30 vs....

Make way for the plant-based diet, the latest buzzword for an optimal diet that focuses on plants, such as grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, rather than a diet of animal products like meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy. Health experts extol the virtues of a plant-based diet as a healthy eating style that can help you fight chronic disease and obesity.
While plant-based diets are not novel, the fact that the trend is catching on is new, according to Reed Mangels, Ph.D., R.D., nutrition adviser of the Vegetarian Resource Group. She says, "More people are interested in plant-based eating; it goes along with the movement to eat more locally grown vegetables and fruits and the availability of plant-based cookbooks.

The Regulatory Flexibility Act requires that agencies publish semiannual regulatory agendas in the Federal Register describing regulatory actions they are developing that may have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities (5 U.S.C. 602). Executive Order 12866 ``Regulatory Planning and Review,'' signed September 30, 1993 (58 FR 51735), and Office of Management and Budget memoranda implementing section 4 of that Order establish minimum standards for agencies' agendas, including specific types of information for each entry. The Unified Agenda of Federal Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions (Unified Agenda) helps agencies fulfill these requirements. All Federal regulatory agencies have chosen to publish their regulatory agendas as part of the Unified Agenda. Edi...

Snacking sometimes gets a bad rap. A recent study in the International Journal of Obesity reported that people who are obese snack more frequently than nonobese individuals, and the more snacks people eat, the more calories they take in - specifically sweet and fatty foods. But snacking is not all bad. Healthy snacking is a good way to keep your hunger in check so you don't overeat. Sometimes, though, the only options available are not so healthy, so you need to know how to make the best choice.
