  • PHILADELPHIA, July 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Shock soon turned to anger as animal advocates attending last week's Dog Law Advisory Board meeting were told by Governor Rendell's Special Secretary Jessie Smith and Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement's Sue West that important elements of Pennsylvania's hard fought new dog law would not be enforced. Almost two years ago, Governor Rendell, at the urging of the General Assembly and citizens throughout the Commonwealth, signed a law that would require among other things that breeding dogs in commercial kennels have unfettered access to the outside (indoor/outdoor kennel runs), and that all dogs over the age of twelve weeks not be housed on wire flooring (solid or slatted floors only). Historically, dogs in Pennsylvania's puppy mills have been for...

  • DANVILLE Nearly 80 dogs have found refuge at the Boone County Fairground horse stables after being rescued from what witnesses are calling atrocious conditions at a privately run animal shelter. But the owner of that shelter, 53-year-old Trish Bragg, said the animals were being cared for and that there was no reason for the seizure. Boone County sheriffs deputies said they rescued 78 dogs, which are now in the care of the Humane Society of the United States and the sheriffs department. The animals also are being treated to a large donation from national pet supply retailer PetSmart. The dogs, as well as about 20-30 cats, were discovered earlier this week at Safe Haven Animal Rescue Effort, a private animal shelter that was being operated in a former school building in Ottawa, W.Va. But...

  • A coalition of animal rights groups wants to overturn a law signed Wednesday by President Bush that seems to pave the way for the slaughter of thousands of wild horses. Filmmaker Ginger Kathrens of Colorado Springs, cofounder of the Wild Horse and Burro Freedom Alliance, said the coalition in January will urge lawmakers to find a way to overturn a provision in the 2005 budget bill that requires the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to auction off unadoptable or older mustangs.

  • COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A state ballot initiative committee, Coalition to Ban Ohio Dog Auctions (frequently referred to by media as BODA) is aggressively marketing a 2010 campaign to help improve the lives of dogs in Ohio commercial breeding operations. The action follows a scathing report issued on May 25, 2010 by the Inspector General critical of the government's handling of puppy mill investigations. The proposed law would make it illegal for anyone to auction or raffle a dog in Ohio. It would also prohibit bringing dogs into the state for sale or trade that were acquired by auction or raffle elsewhere. Currently auction participants travel from 15 surrounding states to attend the Ohio sales, including from Pennsylvania where public dog auctions are already ...
