WOODBINE, Ill. - By next year, area farms, livestock auction barns and fairgrounds might be part of a national database that animal health officials say will help control animal disease. The effort's progress, however, is uneven in Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois.
The program is the first part of a nation animal identification system under development by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA wants a system that can identify all animals and premises that have had direct contact with a foreign animal disease within 48 hours of that disease's detection.
