NORCO - Two blueprints of a future animal-control facility for Norco hang side-by-side on a wall inside the shelter. One, with sleek black lines and chic penmanship, was designed by an architectural firm.
When it was opened more than a quarter of a century ago, the Putnam County Animal Shelter was capable of housing 25 dogs and no more than 15 cats at one time. In the last year alone, according to Karen Haynes of the animal shelter, the facility has cared for more than 2,000 animals. As well as coping with overcrowding, the shelter is showing its age, beset by inadequate heating and cooling and rust permeating the metal structure. A site has been chosen for a new shelter along W.Va. 62. Some prep work has been done, and architects have been chosen to draw up a design. As is so often the case with large-scale projects, however, signficant funding still remains to be found.

ATLANTA, Aug. 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released genetic blueprints for over 650 genes of influenza viruses into a database accessible to researchers worldwide. The action marks the beginning of a collaboration between the CDC and the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) that will allow for greater access to data on a variety of influenza virus samples obtained from patients in the United States, including avian influenza H5N1 if it should arrive here. Through the new collaboration, CDC expects to provide genetic information for several hundred influenza viruses per year as a way to encourage more research on influenza. The sequence data will be available in nearly real time through Genbank, a public- access...
SAARIAHO L'amour de loin (Harmonia Mundi) The American-premiere production of L'amour de loin by composer Kaija Saariaho and librettist Amin Maalouf was at Santa Fe Opera in 2002. The score impressed at the first hearing, even more at the second and third. It has recently appeared on a double SACD set in a luminous studio performance in which Kent Nagano leads the Deutsches Symphonie- Orchester Berlin with precision, breadth, and tonal sensitivity. The work unfolds at a glacial gait; operagoers will remember the ship of the Aquitanian troubadour creeping across the stage at a snail's pace as he traveled in quest of his idealized love interest, the Countess of Tripoli. The music is nonetheless gripping. Saariaho's scores have something in common with Jackson Pollock's canvases: the overa...
