The East Shore District Health Department issued a rabies awareness alert Thursday for Branford, East Haven and North Branford, and asked residents to be vigilant because of "additional wild animal cases of rabies being identified in the health district," said East Shore Director of Health Michael Pascucilla. He advised residents to take precautions, including immunizing their pets.
Rabies is a fatal disease if a family member or an unvaccinated pet is infected, and is most commonly carried by skunks, raccoons and bats in Connecticut, although any mammal could carry the rabies virus, Pascucilla said in a written release.

Nothing quite defines summertime like the sight of a child running barefoot through the grass. The romantic in me appreciates watching the carefree joy of youth, celebrating escape from the bonds of school by shedding shoes and embracing nature with all 10 toes. The doctor part of me, however, is much more cynical, and thinks that nature is just another word for dirt and bugs.
Actually, going barefoot can be very good for a child's feet (and his soul), as long as you stay alert for hidden risks in the yard, like rusty nails that can lead to a nasty tetanus infection.

HOUSTON, May 12, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Postal Service released statistics today highlighting the cities where the most dog attacks occur nationwide. Houston tops the list with 62 letter carriers attacked in 2010. Nationwide last year, 5,669 postal employees were attacked in more than 1,400 cities, yet that pales in comparison to the 4.7 million Americans bitten annually -- the majority of whom are children.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Like any new immigrant, the deadly West Nile virus became American almost immediately after landing on our shores - altering itself to fit in, and then infecting a popular backyard bird to secure a firm foothold in its new home.
That is the startling conclusion of a decade-long analysis by University of California-Santa Cruz biologist Marm Kilpatrick, who explored the ecology of an infectious disease that killed five Californians this summer and sickened another 197, up from 82 last year.
