:06 p.m. -- Greetings from downtown. The Bandits are ready to play the Washington Stealth tonight. We are sold out, the second such crowd of the season. Apparenlty not everyone is staying home to watch basketball and hockey tonight. Buffalo has its pink helmets on, as part of a fundraiser for cancer research, and we'll get going in about 30 minutes.
A couple of notes -- Angus Goodleaf is the starting goalie tonight. Mike Thompson has played the last four games -- and won them all -- so it's not a bad time to rest him, if there is one Thompson lost his first game but has won the next eight. Goodleaf is 0-2, although he hasn't had much help in front of him.

One perk of the Pre-K Counts in Pennsylvania program became apparent when 5-year-old Lauren Angus of Derry began prodding her mother for more shared reading time.
I have a love for reading that I've always tried to instill in Lauren, but sometimes it's been challenging. Now she's even begun to read to me," said Wendy Angus of Lauren, a student at the Barbara Thompson Early Childhood Literacy Center in Derry Township.

:05 p.m. -- Good evening from tonight's "other game" in Buffalo. I know, the Sabres are attracting most of the attention this evening. But we've got a pretty good lacrosse game in store.
If you missed it, Colorado beat Calgary last night, so the Bandits have a chance for the best record in the league. They need to win their last two games. A win tonight (or next week if necessary) gives them the East title. Calgary has the tiebreaker over Buffalo, so the Roughnecks have the edge if the two teams finish with the same record. So the Bandits have a good reason to play hard down the stretch, no matter what.

:15 p.m. -- Feeling like you need a break from the heat wave? HSBC Arena is the place to be. The Bandits and the Mammoth are ready to play, and the building is on the chilly side. (Where's that jacket?) At least the Skyway is open, so the near-capacity crowd doesn't have to worry about that on the way to the game.
Not too much new for the Bandits' lineup. Jon Harasym is out with the flu. Ian Llord, who sat out last week, is in the lineup. Chris Corbeil, Sean Greenhalgh, Kyle Clancy and Steve Priole are sitting, as Darris Kilgour is relying on experience as the team goes down the stretch.

The Buffalo Bandits can't afford to run in place in the 2011 season. If they aren't moving forward, they are falling behind.
The Bandits go into their 20th season knowing that the quality of play in the National Lacrosse League continues to improve. The lacrosse boom in the United States keeps sending high-quality athletes into the professional ranks. Plus, the league is down to 10 teams for 2011, as the Orlando Titans -- last year's Eastern Division champions -- closed up shop. The NLL hasn't been at 10 teams since 2006.
