Once every four years, the University of Southern Maine's music and theater departments collaborate on a fully staged opera production. The 2009 quadrennial celebration kicked off Friday night with two grand one-hour operas by Giacomo Puccini: "Suor Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi." Both were sung in English. Originally part of a triptych of Puccini's one-act operas ("Il Trittico"), each opera draws inspiration from Dante's "Divine Comedy.
