Except for a brief stint during World War II spent in Detroit working at a Chrysler plant, Andrew "Sunbeam" Mitchell never strayed far from his beloved Beale Street, where for almost 20 years in the middle part of the last century, he presided over an empire of vice, food and music.
As Memphis author Preston Lauterbach recounts in "The Chitlin' Circuit and the Road to Rock 'N' Roll" (Norton, $26.95), Mitchell and a handful of fellow entrepreneurs around the country were pivotal, if unsung, players in American postwar life. They were innovators not just in the vice and entertainment trades but also unlikely (and probably unwitting) builders of the black business class and nurturers of a revolution in music whose effects still reverberate today.

Andrew J. Mitchell, 48, became president and chief executive of Central Suffolk Hospital in May 2001. Since then, the hospital has changed its name to the Peconic Bay Medical Center, expanded services and grown its physical plant. In November, the Commission on Healthcare in the 21st Century - known alternately as the Berger Commission, for Chairman Stephen Berger - made recommendations for state hospitals because, Berger announced, "the system is broken." Some hospitals were called on to close while others were told to consolidate services with other hospitals.
