  • The Augusta Commission is one vote away from firing city attorney Stephen Shepard and setting up a government legal department. Plans to recommend hiring W. Eugene Jessup, an attorney in private practice in Macon, Ga., as general counsel and Columbus, Ga., attorney Andrew G. Mackenzie as staff attorney at Tuesday's commission meeting were unexpectedly postponed, possibly because two strong advocates for an in-house legal department were absent. Commissioners Betty Beard and Calvin Holland were on their way to Reno, Nev., for a League of Cities conference.
