The movie's creators are too busy taking dopey shots at popular culture to create a world of their own. There's something about this kind of glib, hipster attitude that makes both [Shrek] films feel cowardly and forgettable.
Just like last time, the movie is almost salvaged by Eddie Murphy's anarchic sidekick, Donkey. It's still a kick to watch Murphy spinning his 1980s fast-talking, sublimely comic motor-mouth routine into a buck-toothed animated jackass. Behind those computer-generated floppy ears, Murphy's more alive than he has been on-screen in ages. (Donkey's entrance is a nifty nod to 48 Hrs.--perhaps the only in-joke this movie doesn't oversell.)
