It wasn't that long ago that our computers here in the newsroom were little more than word processors.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, we'd type our stories into the computer, put coding on them, check for spelling errors, then send them on their way.

There was a smile on his face as he walked through the hallways of Mizzou Arena on Monday afternoon. With one of the most hectic weeks of his life behind him, Mike Anderson looked relaxed.

It was some time after 2 a.m., maybe after 3, when Marcus Williams walked into the pitch-black room he shares with Rashad Anderson at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown D.C. Williams is not particularly fond of the dark, probably having something to do with his phobia of scary movies. So when Anderson leaped out of the darkness and grabbed Williams around the legs, he yelped and nearly jumped out of his skin.
Almost killed himself," chuckled Anderson, probably longer and louder than his University of Connecticut coach, Jim Calhoun, would have done if he had heard the story. "I mean, he was scared. I was just having fun with my teammates. I do that with all of them.

Air Force ROTC cadet David Anderson, 20, isn't the first jogger to puff up Painter's Hill Road before breakfast, but he's still a rare sight here.
The first jogger the community ever saw was another ROTC cadet named Gene something or other, and he, too, was a Virginia Tech student volunteering his time to help the elderly and the infirm. His inaugural 1988 run through the withered mining town elicited urgent offers of help.
