  • This paper presents an instance of failed large scale social innovation from a cross sector social partnership even though the partnership seemed to succeed in its narrow mission. The mechanisms that led to less than complete success can shed light on the reasons behind the failure of social change mechanisms. The case study presented is between a non-profit organization and a business. It demonstrates that when the strategic intent of the social actors is prescriptive, it imprisons the possibilities for fundamental change. This limitation is due to the pre-defined relatively narrow responsibilities associated with different individual or social agents. The paper is calling to move beyond reactive and proactive responsibilities and to shift towards accepting adaptive responsibilities th...

  • Crisis events can threaten organizations through each stage of their life cycle. Further, research suggests that crises are happening more regularly and across a wider range of issues (Hart et al., 2001). Thus, it is important to understand the steps that organizations can take to mitigate loss due to crisis events, as well as speed recovery efforts. This paper examines how perception management can influence the speed and degree to which an organization recovers from a crisis. We highlight two cases to demonstrate the interrelationship between crisis management and perception management. Additionally, we present a framework to guide business leaders through the use of perception management within a crisis context.

  • The U.S. Attorneys office in Charleston and the Kanawha County Prosecutors office have cooperated many times over the years. Now the two offices are designating a particular person to make that happen. Maryclaire Akers, who has been chief of staff for the county prosecutors office, will be special assistant U.S. attorney to the Southern District of West Virginia. Akers is no stranger to her new job. She has been splitting her time between the two offices for the past few weeks. But U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin and Kanawha Prosecutor Mark Plants made the move official Friday. Akers retains her prosecuting responsibilities in Plants office, including that of felony cases and prosecuting Shawn Lester, the Charleston man accused in the 2003 sniper style shootings of three Kanawha County resi...

  • A new approach to crisis management is emerging which progresses beyond a purely reactive response and creates fresh opportunities for improved organizational development. This paper outlines the traditional event approach to crisis management, which focuses on preparing for and responding to a major adverse occurrence, and discusses the new process approach, which reshapes crisis management within a broader continuum of management activity. Crisis prevention instead of just crisis response necessitates moving responsibility from the operational to the executive level. The paper builds on a nonlinear model to explore how crisis management activities can be clustered together and integrated to optimize organizational effectiveness.

  • FEMA meeting The Federal Emergency Management Agency will present its updated Dubuque County flood insurance rate maps at 6:30 tonight at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds ballroom. House bill fails A bill sponsored by state Rep. Tom Schueller, D-Maquoketa, which would have prohibited state funding for construction projects and rebuilding projects due to flooding in 500-year flood zones, failed to make it out of committee. Several municipalities, including Dubuque, argued the bill would create disincentive to improve their riverfronts. The Port of Dubuque and the Historic Millwork District both sit in a 500-year flood plain. "It met a lot of resistance," Schueller said. "In the six years I've been here, I've never seen so many people show up at a subcommittee meeting. I should have char...

  • Austin, who has two adult children with her husband of 35 years, Herbert Austin, also traveled to Mozambique in 1996, to serve as an election observer in the elections following the Southern African nation's civil war. Austin observes that over the years the role of the UN has changed, from the proactive nation-building force she joined in the 1970's to a reactive conflict-management organization. It is a change that concerns Austin, currently an associate editor at Carib News, a New York-based weekly publication covering events in the diasporic Caribbean community. You realize that people are the same, all over the world. It doesn't matter where they're from," said Austin. "We're all human beings put here to try and find the best way of dealing with each other without trying to create...
