That's why we've sent some of our finest citizens to help you, Mr. Prime Minister. We want you to succeed. It's in our Nation's interest that you succeed. And I'm confident we will succeed. The Prime Minister came, and he didn't say this directly to me, but I could tell by looking in my eyes, he wanted to make sure that this was a President who kept his word.
WASHINGTON, July 24 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following is a transcript of remarks by President Bush and Prime Minister Maliki of the Republic of Iraq in a press availability (part 2 of 2): PRESIDENT BUSH: Two questions a side, starting with you, Tom.
NEW YORK -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki walked a fine line Sunday: confronting his American backers over what he sees as violations of Iraq's sovereignty while stressing that his relations are rock solid with the country on whose support he still relies. Success is shared," he said in an interview with The Associated Press, referring to his deeply intertwined partnership with President Bush and the U.S. government. "God forbid, failure is also shared.
BAGHDAD - Sunni politicians applauded goals set down in an agreement hammered out by the country's top leaders under intense American pressure but expressed doubt Monday that the U.S.-backed prime minister would actually see them through. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and four other senior leaders declared Sunday they had reached a consensus on a number of issues, including freeing detainees held without charge, easing the ban on former Saddam Hussein supporters in government posts, regulating the oil industry and holding provincial elections.
QALACHWALAN, Iraq - The Sunni vice president wanted for allegedly running a hit squad in Iraq on Friday accused Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki of waging a campaign against Sunnis and pushing the country toward sectarian war. In an interview with The Associated Press, Tariq al-Hashemi said al-Maliki wants to get rid of all political rivals and run Iraq like a "one-man-show.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - More than five years have passed since Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah last received Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki. The Saudi monarch views al-Maliki as untrustworthy and, even worse, as "an Iranian agent. Saudi Arabia doesn't allow direct flights between its capital, Riyadh, and Baghdad, and it doesn't permit direct trade between the two countries. The kingdom is building a fence along the closed 500- mile border.
It was the "mission accomplished" moment that millions of Americans had been waiting for and many of us considered long overdue: the official end to the war in Iraq and the return of all U.S. troops. Whether you believe the operation in Iraq was a noble cause or pure folly, President Obama's announcement last month that fighting men and women would be coming home to their families in time for the holidays was cause for celebration. It also should raise an alarm. The withdrawal is widely perceived throughout the region as a victory for Iran. Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, called it a "serious mistake" that would encourage a deeper and more dangerous alliance between Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki and Tehran - fears implicitly validated by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton...
The Iraqi Government in confirmation of its resolute rights under existing Security Council resolutions will request to extend the mandate of the Multi-National Force-Iraq (MNF-I) under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter for a final time.
