Saturday last I spent with 18 young men who were discerning vocations to the priesthood. We spend the better part of a day together, talking, praying and reflecting on what it might be like to train for the ordained ministry in our own day and age. With grace and a few prayers we might just get a few vocations out of the little rascals. But the challenges of young men considering the priesthood are not new. More than 4,000 years ago, a document was written in ancient Sumerian by a schoolmaster responsible for the training young scribal priests in ancient Mesopotamia, in what is now modern Iraq.
