Any new book by Paul Johnson is a matter of notice and celebration. Mr. Johnson, an amateur historian in the very best sense of the word, has an excellent claim to being the most widely read and intellectually influential historian in the world over the past half century. His histories of the English, American and Jewish peoples are superb, and his masterpiece "Modern Times" played a central role in shaping the post-Reagan conservative intellectual interpretation of the 20th century.
As he showed in his iconoclastic, blistering set of profiles in "Intellectuals" and in subjects as unlikely as his histories of the Holy Land and of ancient Egypt, Mr. Johnson is incapable of writing a sentence that does not delight, infuriate but, most of all, surprise, challenge and inform his readers. On...

Dear readers, as today's Blessing Way column is being composed, a popular revolution and political upheaval is occurring in the ancient country of Egypt. Egypt is considered to be the stable linchpin and vital ally of the United States in that volatile Middle East region of the world, that has served as a kind of regulator of the potentially explosive events that could erupt from the prevailing circumstances there, where the world's "holy war" is daily being waged.
As of this writing, the resolution of the Egyptian upheaval is yet unclear. Many foreign nationals, including U.S. citizens, are leaving Egypt; many from the ruling and affluent class are also fleeing; Egyptians are demanding the resignation of the President Hosni Mubarak. The world is concerned, with many nations and states ...

What's the connection between the profanity rappers use in their songs and early African culture? There isn't one. As far as experts can tell, there were no curse words, as we understand them today, among the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt. This shouldn't be too difficult to fathom, for the very word "hieroglyph" itself means 'sacred, holy, or divine writings.' According to the book, The Egyptian Museum in Cairo: a Walk through the Alleys of Ancient Egypt (2005) by Abeer el-Shahawy, "The ancient [monotheistic] Egyptians called their language...'the divine words' or 'the words of the god'. The word hieroglyph comes from the Greek, and also means 'sacred writing'." As has been well documented, the core of Greek culture and philosophy are indeed African based. Understandably, "hieroglyph" wa...

Calling me a person of "low moral character and turpitude so as to be unfit to be licensed" to practice law for having represented [Tawana Brawley] is defamatory and actionable. Moreover, he also wrote that my representation of Brawley was "disgraceful." In other words, a Black, female rape victim is not entitled to legal representation.
A pathologist found that [Harry Crist, Jr.] was murdered. This confirmed my claim and exposed [Robert Abrams] as a liar. A grand juror hae submitted an affidavit saying that Abrams violated the law by writing the grand jury report himself. In it, he, and not the grand jury, stated that Tawana had committed a "hoax." A petit jury, in 1998, exonerated me of all [Steven Pagones]' defamation claims.

As pediatric surgeons, we never expected to be writing an article such as this, but the rash of skin infections related to shaving various parts of the body is reaching epidemic proportions. In the last decade, pubic hair removal has been on the rise among teenage boys and girls.
This practice can be traced back to ancient Egypt and Greece in the 17th century. By the 1940s, female body shaving, especially in the underarm region and legs was established as the cultural norm, and pubic hair removal trailed closely behind, booming in popularity since the 1980s. The reasons for shaving are vast and have been evolving since the practice first began. First done to prevent parasite infestation, it is now practiced to increase feelings of sexual attractiveness and the desire to feel "clean" and...

My mailman is probably becoming stoop-shouldered from all of the mail he delivers to me on a daily basis: bills, credit card and subscription offers, financial statements, business proposals and magazines as well as the usual "junk mail." However, the all-too- occasional personal letter stands out immediately because of its rarity. Letter-writing, which throughout much of recent history was the most popular method of communication, started to decline after World War II.
During that war, letters from sweethearts and wives who had decided to break up with their soldiers who were overseas, were so frequent, they became known as "Dear Johns." Emily Post's 1922 edition of her book on manners devoted a substantial portion to the art of letter-writing.
In Egypt there is an ancient custom of writing letters to d...
