I started the engine, the lights went on and we saw that were had stopped right in front of a sign that said we were some thousands of meters high in the mountains. There were snow markers all along the road. Maybe because of the battles I felt as if we were somewhere near Glen Coe.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Love is the only force strong enough to conquer hate." Marvin Gaye sang, "War is not the answer for only love can conquer hate." Lionel Ritchie also sang, "Love will conquer all. This is also the time of the year when people are celebrating different festivals, cultures, religions, and joy about just being alive. There is Christmas, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, and Hanukkah. (Both Ramadan and Hanukkah are celebrated at different times of the [Gregorian] calendar). HANUKKAH: It is the 'festival of lights,' the triumph of ancient Jewish heroes. It starts on the 25th day of Kislev in the Jewish calendar. It is celebrated at different times in the Gregorian ca...

  • If ever a college basketball game screamed out not to be played, Tuesday night's contest between USC and Southern would have to be the one. It might have been warmer outside the Sports Arena than inside, and 15 minutes before tipoff, the lights in the ancient arena went out. Once things got going, an undermanned Southern had little to offer the Trojans, who cruised to a 91-58 victory before an announced 2,169.

  • The holiday season is all ablaze, with lights to brighten the eye and warm the spirit. The candles of Hanukkah, recalling the triumph of the Maccabees in repulsing an army of Syrians who tried to evict the Jews from ancient Israel, twinkle for eight days in the Jewish "festival of the lights." The lights of Christmas celebrate the birth of Christ, symbolizing the coming of the Messiah and the triumph of light over darkness in a world of suffering. It's a season about survival, of standing up to evil forces. The lighting of the candles for the rededicated temple commemorates the miracle of the everlasting light above the altar that burned for eight days when there was only oil enough for one day.
