It's related to "Straw Man," insofar as the person committing the fallacy now attacks the bad misreading (i.e. straw version) of the opponent's argument rather than the actual argument. But it seems that "" occurs before "Straw Man." Moreover, even if "" is a subspecies of "Straw Man" it's specific enough to deserve its own name.

If I had to either sell security systems or go hungry, I suppose I'd try like heck to convince my prospective clients that they were overestimating their existing safeguards and underestimating their risk. Maybe that's why I'm having such a difficult time buying the analogy that Kris Kobach uses to counter criticism that his voter ID proposal is a solution in search of a problem. I feel like I'm getting a sales job.

I don't know where Joseph Lallande ("Food sovereignty and the Firearms Freedom Act," BDN OpEd, July 23) got a copy of the food sovereignty ordinance that cites the U.S. Constitution as an "authority." My copy cites the Declaration of Independence, the Maine Constitution and two titles of the Maine Revised Statutes. It is true that the local farm ordinance appeals to people across the political spectrum, including "tenthers," but it is not true that it is based on the U.S. Constitution.
