Geoff Jenkins always has been a streaky hitter, an enigmatic performer who goes through extended slumps as well as torrid stretches over the course of a long season. No matter the route he took, he usually got to the finish line with respectable numbers.
But barring a fabulous finish over the final two months, Jenkins' usual numbers won't be there this year. Maine is the only state where the Legislature picks the attorney general; most are elected by the public with a handful appointed by the governor. Maine is one of three states that have the Legislature select the secretary of state. The state treasurer and auditor are also chosen by the Legislature.

Officials say they don't know why a critical reference is missing in a set of handwritten notes that sheds new light on a federal investigation of Mayor Willie Herenton's business practices.
At issue are two sets of notes - nearly identical - but with one key difference: One set references a 2004 trip Herenton made to Dallas; the other doesn't.

As mad as John Lannan was at himself for the way he pitched yesterday, the Washington Nationals left-hander was more upset at the reason why he pitched the way he did.
The game plan, I just went way away from it," he said. "I'm going to have days when I'm going to get hit, and I know that. But it's the mental part where you're not following what we talked about. That's what I'm upset about what happened today.
