  • CAMDEN, N.J. - The charter bus arrived on a warm day in May a year ago, and when the doors opened, close to 50 people climbed aboard. They brought with them hopes for a better future - in decent homes, free of drugs and crime and all the woes that come of living on the margins. For days, months or years, they had been living in a rag-tag city of tents, tucked away in the woods near Camden's downtown. Then, Amir Khan - a pastor and entrepreneur - came along and promised them homes for a year.

  • Etc. Amir Khan was thought to be nothing more than a pretender after he was knocked out by Breidis Prescott in the first round of their lightweight fight in September 2008. Not only did Khan go on to prove he was the real deal by winning the super lightweight world championship three fights later, he has made four subsequent defenses.

  • Boxing has always had some difficulty getting the best to fight the best. Sometimes rival promoters get in the way. More recently, one fighter refusing special drug testing requested by another prevented a fight from happening. Freddie Roach came up with something new this week. The Hall of Fame trainer was asked what he thought about the possibility of Amir Khan taking on pound-for-

  • Amir Khan has grand plans for 2012. If unbeaten Timothy Bradley again opts against fighting Khan in a junior welterweight championship unification fight, the British star intends to move up to 147 pounds. If the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. showdown doesn't materialize, Khan hopes he'll be Mayweather's opponent May 5 in Las Vegas.

  • Timothy Bradley's dream is to fight the best in the world, meaning the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. But Bradley is not like a lot of fighters, who believe they deserve megafights before they've earned them. I do want Amir Khan, I do want Mayweather, and Pacquiao," said Bradley, the 27-year-old junior welterweight world champion from Palm Springs. "In order to get to these guys (Mayweather and Pacquiao), I would have to fight Amir Khan first in order to be mentioned in the same breath with a Mayweather or a Pacquiao.

  • In the morning, the President traveled to the Presidential Palace in Kabul, Afghanistan. Later, President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan awarded him the Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan Insignia. He then returned to Bagram Air Force Base, where he met with U.S. Special Forces personnel.

  • Judging by some of Zab Judah's comments during a recent conference call, he might not still be the crazy guy who went after referee Jay Nady after he was knocked out by Kostya Tszyu in 2001 and who instigated a brawl by intentionally fouling Floyd Mayweather Jr. during their fight in 2006. I'm just more focused in on my career now," said Brooklyn's Judah, who tonight will take on Amir Khan of England in a super lightweight title unification bout at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas (on HBO). "I'm focused in on family and the morals of life, as a young man should be.

  • Timothy Bradley of Palm Springs took some heat when he passed up a reported $1.4million to face fellow junior welterweight champion Amir Khan in a fight that would have taken place in July. Bradley then announced he was leaving his co-promoters, Gary Shaw and Ken Thompson, saying he had become a free agent.

  • Devon Alexander was raised in the rough north St. Louis neighborhood of Hyde Park, where gangs and drugs were prevalent. Unlike many of his friends - and a brother who is serving a prison sentence for robbery - he was able to steer clear of the worst those streets had to offer. One might say that a young man containing the wherewithal to do that has a right to say what he wants. But it was startling to hear what Alexander had to say about fellow junior welterweight world champion Amir Khan of England during a conference call this week promoting Alexander's title unification fight against Timothy Bradley on Jan. 29 in Detroit (on HBO).
