THE Washington Post reported that private colleges seeking to raise their profiles are in a competitive bidding war for highly qualified students regardless of financial need. The trend is luring away from prestigious but expensive institutions even some students from affluent families. The average student at a private college last year reaped a 42 percent discount on the published tuition, according to an industry survey, a historic high, the newspaper reported. Admission experts say more colleges use merit awards to lure strong students who might not otherwise attend, including those who could afford to pay full price.
