An Oak Hill teenager will sing before a crowd of more than 20,000 on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. Jessica Bounds, 16, was one of five girls selected to perform at the North American Youth Congress, an event of the United Pentecostal Church International.

ONE-THIRD of American children are overweight or obese. More than 12 million adolescents suffer from obesity. What used to be adult onset diabetes has become a childhood disease in the past decade. Poor nutrition promotes this seeming contradiction of obesity and hunger - yet that very contradiction is epidemic in American youth. The U.S. Congress missed a recent opportunity to unite our nation in the fight against childhood obesity and hunger when they passed an agriculture appropriations bill that included language to weaken the USDA's school nutrition standards. Unfortunately, while engaging in partisan wrangling over whether tomato paste constitutes a vegetable, Congress missed the big picture - the health of America's children.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, the photographs of 9- year-old Christina Taylor-Green and her purported killer, 22-year- old Jared Lee Loughner, may speak volumes about American youth culture. Christina was the third-grade victim of the shooting that took place at the "Congress on Your Corner" event sponsored by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday in Tucson. The image of Christina released to the media is the picture of innocence and wholesomeness - her sweet smile and wide eyes conveying the kind and capable spirit for which she was known.
