On Jan 1, 2009, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was significantly and purposefully amended to broaden the number of employees who can claim to be disabled and seek ADA protection. Under the ADA Amendment Act of 2008 (ADAAA), more individuals will likely be deemed disabled and will qualify for reasonable accommodations and protections from alleged discrimination. The prior ADA did not define the term "major life activities." Rather, the EEOC (by regulation) and the courts (by case law) developed a list of examples. The ADAAA expands that term to epic proportions. The revised and non-exhaustive list of major life activities includes: 1. caring for oneself, 2. hearing, 3. performing manual tasks, 4. seeing, 5. speaking, 6. breathing, 7. learning and 8. reading. The ADAAA provides...

If you're one of the 7.1 million Californians hitting the highway this holiday season, you may get a nice surprise: Cleaner, brighter and more accessible rest stops.
At a cost of $13 million a year, nearly half of the state's 87 rest stops have gotten makeovers since 2000 and all are supposed to be up to federal American's with Disabilities Act standards by 2009.

This study focused on school-level approaches to assessment and accountability policies and practices. A national random sample of 131 (34.22%) principals from juvenile correctional schools for committed youth (JC) responded to a mail and on-line survey. No statistically significant differences existed between respondent and nonrespondent schools. Results indicated that the majority of students with or without disabilities in JC schools participated in state assessments. The most common basis of school policies for assessment accommodations was state accommodation guidelines. For most JC schools there was no process for accountability for student participation and performance on state assessments. Almost half of principals did not know if their school made Adequate Yearly Progress. Othe...

The law requires that public schools provide students with disabilities access to information technology "that is equivalent to the access provided individuals who are not disabled" (Noble). Because state legislation varies, school library professionals should check with local special education staff and/or district legal counsel to determine which laws apply to their respective library media programs.
