KNOXVILLE - The city of Knoxville is being sued by a red light camera vendor in a case that could change the new state law limiting citations for improper right turns on red. American Traffic Solutions Inc. filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Knox County Chancery Court. The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company provided the equipment for the city's red-light cameras in Knoxville.

Despite being a vocal supporter of red-light cameras, Millington mayor Richard Hodges says he will not support a plan that would put cameras at more than two intersections. Hodges' statement comes after the city already has signed a contract with traffic camera vendor American Traffic Solutions Inc. to install cameras at four intersections on U.S. 51.
More than five years after the first red-light camera was installed in Missouri, the merits of photo enforcement are still being debated. To proponents, the cameras are useful tools for changing drivers' behavior and increasing public safety. To opponents, they are nothing more than a revenue-generating scheme that leaves bad drivers on the road.

Red-light cameras are making their return to Virginia. Don't believe the propaganda that this has anything to do with safety - it's all about money. In two weeks, a for-profit company will begin mailing traffic tickets to the owners of vehicles passing through three Alexandria intersections. The private company, American Traffic Solutions, Inc., operates the traffic cameras, makes the initial decision who is guilty, mails the tickets, collects the fines and then gives the city a cut of the windfall.
