William Grant Still, "The Dean" of African-American composers, was a trailblazer when it came to classical music. He was the first Black person to conduct a major American symphony orchestra, the first to have a symphony of his own performed by a leading orchestra, the first to have an opera performed by a major opera company, and the first to have an opera performed on national television.
In 1949 his opera Troubled Island was performed by the New York City Opera and he became the first opera by an African-American to conduct a major company. In 1955 he conducted the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra and became the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra in the Deep South.

In a climate of orchestral downsizing and downright disbanding, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra is doing something quite remarkable: filling seats.
Defying the trend many American orchestras face, the MSO in its 2010-11 season has shown dramatic increases in attendance, sponsorships and donations. Single concert ticket sales are up by 45 percent, according to the organization, and overall attendance is up, averaging 78 percent per concert. That includes seven sold out events, nearly one-fourth of its season. In addition, season subscribers and donorships are significantly up, notably an almost 20 percent increase in contributions by individuals, businesses and foundations from $2.1 million to $2.5 million.

The Pittsburgh Symphony is one of two winners of the 2006 Bank of America Award for Excellence in Orchestra Education, administered by the American Symphony Orchestra League.
The symphony will receive $7,500 in recognition of its work with the Wilkinsburg school district that included identifying and helping meet music education needs, including raising more than $45,000 at four concerts over the past three years.
