October 2, 1989 -- "Say, aren't you a little young to be a head basketball coach at a college? Jack Armstrong probably heard that a lot on his first weeks on the job. Armstrong was hired as the head coach at Niagara at the not- so-ripe-old age of 26.
Decades ago, the owners of the Spirits of St. Louis, an American Basketball Association team, negotiated one of the great contract coups in the history of sports. Some $200 million later, the long-defunct team is in court asking for the revenue stream to be even a little larger. But the former ABA team lost a round earlier this month when a New York appeals court said the lawsuit should have been filed in federal court.

Yet the Sporting News made it official Wednesday, recognizing the 98-year-old Wooden as the pinnacle of a profession that was redefined by the former UCLA coach over his unmatched career in Westwood.
