Forty-five commercial and public buildings in the Portland-metro area bear Energy Star labels, among the most in the country. But a new energy ratings system from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers could make those ratings seem less appealing.
Instead of giving gold stars, like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program, the new system gives letter grades. And ASHRAE is a tough grader.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) proposed to amend its energy conservation standards for several classes of commercial heating, air-conditioning, and water-heating equipment and to adopt new energy conservation standards for computer room air conditioners in a January 2012 notice of proposed rulemaking (January 2012 NOPR). The levels that DOE proposed to adopt were equivalent to the efficiency levels contained in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/ American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)/Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Standard 90.1-2010 (ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010). In addition, DOE proposed in the January 2012 NOPR to update the current Federal test procedures, or for certain equipment types adopt ne...

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to amend its energy conservation standards for several classes of commercial heating, air-conditioning, and water-heating equipment. Pursuant to the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 (EPCA), as amended, DOE must assess whether the uniform national standards for these covered equipment need to be updated each time the corresponding industry standard--the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)/Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Standard 90.1 (ASHRAE Standard 90.1)--is amended, which most recently occurred on October 29, 2010. Based upon its analysis of the energy savings potential of amended energy conservation standards...

ATLANTA, June 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air- Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) on allergies solutions:
Are you one of the millions of watery-eyed, red-nosed allergy sufferers reaching for allergy-relief medication but wishing there was a better way? Are you considering the purchase of a room air cleaner, like those advertised in upscale gadget shops? These products are being heavily advertised as a cost-effective solution to allergy problems -- but are they more cost effective than other installed solutions?

After two years of planning and fundraising, a pair of professional organizations finished a major charitable project - providing St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children in Norfolk with an efficient solar water-heating system.
The International Facility Management Association of Hampton Roads and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers of Hampton Roads decided two years ago to work together to provide energy-efficient equipment to local nonprofit organizations.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air- Conditioning Engineers recently commissioned a Morrison Hershfield research team to examine how multiple common building methods affect a building envelope's ability to keep warm or cool air either in or out.
The team spent two years looking at different construction "assemblies" - steel-stud construction, for example - and the way heat can travel through them. The research was accepted by the ASHRAE research board, and researcher and building science specialist Stephane P. Hoffman recently presented the results to a group of engineers, architects and officials at the Center for Architecture in Portland.

When the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air- Conditioning Engineers introduced its new energy-efficiency evaluation program last summer, Ashforth Pacific's Wade Lange openly questioned the need for yet another ratings system.
After all, as Lange noted during an interview with the DJC last August, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program already provides a means by which commercial properties are measured and rated for energy efficiency. The U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program rates new and renovated buildings for energy savings. And the Green Globes program also provides energy assessments.
