The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) -- the association of associations -- recently completed a major study based on Collins and Porras' seminal works, Built to Last and Good to Great. Many of you are probably familiar with the books, which compared matched pairs of companies, analyzing a variety of factors to determine why some companies managed to become exceptional leaders and others did not. ASAE took a similar approach with associations and found that "great" associations exhibited seven distinct attributes that the "good" associations did not.
