The abrupt and thus far unexplained closing in Henry County of the factory of furniture manufacturers American of Martinsville and Barcalounger has put 228 more people out on the street in a region that includes the state's highest rate of unemployment.
Both companies are owned by Hancock Park Associates, a private investment company based in Los Angeles. Numerous phone calls and an e-mail to Hancock Park partner Michael Fourticq Jr. received no response Tuesday.

It is good to see that justice was served after 94 years ("Radio host wins pardon for great-uncles," Nation, Thursday). Tom Joyner's campaign to absolve two great-uncles who were executed for the murder of a Confederate Army veteran was not in vain.
Please allow me to share another story of American injustice. It is the story of the Martinsville Seven, the largest mass execution for rape in U.S. history. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Martinsville Seven. In 1949, seven black men from Martinsville, Va., were sentenced to death for the rape of a 32-year-old married white woman. By 1951, all had been executed in Richmond. At the time of their arrests, five of these men were teenagers, and one was a World War II veteran with a wife and five young children.

NEW MARTINSVILLE - New Martinsville is the first West Virginia city to host the "Field of Flags," a traveling memorial for American service members killed during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

NEW MARTINSVILLE - New Martinsville is the first West Virginia city to host the "Field of Flags," a traveling memorial for American service members killed during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The field was opened for public viewing along W.Va. 2 Saturday, and it's expected to remain until Sept. 4. New Martinsville United Methodist Church is hosting the exhibit of 6,198 U.S. flags. That number includes those placed in recognition of the service members who died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Aug. 6.
