President Barack Obama on Monday spoke in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association, pushing his plan to reshape the nation's health care system and extend coverage to millions without it.

President Obama has begun the job of selling his still-evolving health care reform plan to Americans. This week he addressed the American Medical Association, whose support, or at least neutrality, could be key.
The president told doctors he was sympathetic to one of their key goals - protection from medical-malpractice lawsuits. He said he was opposed to capping awards - trial lawyers are a key Democratic constituency - but was open to protecting doctors who treat patients within "evidence-based guidelines" from lawsuits.

WASHINGTON -- The health care overhaul working its way through Congress probably won't reach the president's desk until next year, Rep. John Murtha said Thursday.
Murtha's comments during an interview with the Tribune-Review were made as the House prepared for a rare Saturday vote on Democrats' health care plan, which picked up coveted endorsements from the AARP and American Medical Association. Thousands of opponents to the bill gathered on the Capitol lawn around noon to denounce the bill and rally around House Republicans who oppose it.

TUCSON, Ariz., Nov. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Donald Berwick, M.D., Obama's recess appointee to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has resigned rather than face a Senate confirmation hearing. He would have faced intense questioning about his affection for the British National Health Service (NHS) and its rationing methods.
The American Medical Association, which has not recanted its endorsement of Obama's signature healthcare reform plan, praised the nomination of Marilyn Tavenner, Berwick's deputy, as his successor.
