  • Long before french fries, ice cream and snack foods took over, indigenous foods such as corn, squash, beans, salmon, trout and bison fed the country. Now, a movement is afoot among leaders of American Indian communities to return to such healthy foods of their heritage, and to teach non-Indians about their little-understood cuisine.

  • [ROBERT ROBIDEAU], [Leonard Peltier]'s first cousin and a former member of AIM's Northwest chapter, worked closely with [Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash] during AIM's efforts on Pine Ridge. In 1976, Robideau, along with fellow AIM activist Dino Butler, was acquitted of shooting the two FBI agents on grounds of self defense while Peltier was still on the run from the law. Robideau served as a spokesperson for the AIM's New Mexico chapter from 1992 to 1996 and maintains a residence in Edgewood. On Feb. 23, 2004, News From Indian Country published an article by Robideau in which he alleges AIM founder [Dennis Banks] and the [Vernon Bellecourt] brothers were involved in Pictou-Aquash's death. During that period of time, the wife of David Hill [another AIM activist] approached me and told me that the...

  • Loren Duckman has thought a lot about what it takes to be an effective criminal defense attorney. Until recently, he was . doing just that inside [Matt Valerio]'s office. First he lists Sleigh's physical attributes: handsome, good voice, presents himself well. "Then you've gotta have all the rules of evidence. You've gotta know the law. You've gotta be good with people. And you have to be smart on your feet," says Duckman. "So it's like a baseball player who can run, throw, hit, catch and understands the game . . . He's got all the tools a great trial lawyer has, which is very rare. Sleighs office, across from a Chinese restaurant, affords a good view of the man. He doesn't hide his history. You can't miss the photo that looks like an album cover from his days at Macalaster; he's the o...

  • SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- A Canadian man charged with killing a former American Indian Movement member in 1975 acknowledged on an audiotape that he was with her moments before she was shot and left for dead in a ravine, according to a transcript obtained by The Associated Press. John Graham is charged with first-degree murder in the kidnapping and slaying of Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, who prosecutors say was killed because AIM leaders suspected she was a government informant. Prosecutors say Graham shot her in the back of the head as she begged for her life.

  • The legendary Black Hills encompass an area about 120 miles long and between 40 and 50 miles wide. Most of this often wild and beautiful terrain lies in southwestern South Dakota. A portion is across the border in Wyoming. It's a region that has long been in deep dispute, as University of Oregon history professor Jeffrey Ostler shows in his lucid and always even-handed "The Lakotas and The Black Hills," subtitled "The Struggle for Sacred Ground.
