I was pleased to read John Atchley's repudiation, in the Dec. 6 Letters column, of the notion that conservative Republicans care only about their own welfare and that of their billionaire friends, the CEOs of health care companies. The characterization of conservatives opposed to health care reform as stooges of the pharmaceutical and insurance industries is unproductive Personal perspective is pertinent, however, as Atchley suggests when he calls himself an ordinary American who has only known one CEO of a health insurance company. In a country where 90 percent of us consider ourselves middle class and ordinary, it might help to see the differences in our ordinariness. I've never known the CEO of a health-insurance company. Although Corporate Connections consists solely of African-American Nationwide employees from across the country, it's not organized under the insurance company's auspices, members said. Many of Thursday's guests were Nationwide officials, including Jerry Jurgensen, chief executive officer. Honors also went to Leonard "Len" Johnson, whose record sales during his Nationwide career earned him the group's Trailblazer Award, and to Clenzo Fox, the first Black lawyer in Nationwide's legal department, who received the Donna James Award.
