DENVER - A Denver judge blocked Colorado's first school voucher program Friday, calling the program to give parents in the state's wealthiest county checks for tuition at religious schools a "substantial disservice to the public interest.
Denver District Judge Michael Martinez sided with a group of parents, the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado and the group Americans United for Separation of Church and State. They asked for an injunction blocking the "Choice Scholarship Pilot Program" in Douglas County.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa's agreed Monday to a preliminary injunction against a jail policy that limited inmates' correspondence with relatives and friends to postcards.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado challenged the policy and a similar one in Boulder, and a court hearing for the El Paso case was scheduled for Wednesday. However, the agreement, which was approved by Chief Judge Wiley Y. Daniel of the U.S. District Court in Denver, negated the need for the hearing.

WICHITA, Kan. - Kansas officials want more nonprofit and faith- based groups to work with criminal offenders, hoping they can reduce the number of former inmates who return to prison later for committing new crimes.
Kansas Corrections Secretary Ray Roberts opened a statewide conference on prison ministry by encouraging religious volunteers to increase their efforts to help offenders stay out of prison. The "Out for Life" conference in Wichita was organized by Prison Fellowship, which promotes ministry in prisons and church support for offenders after their release.

Three civil liberties organizations filed suit Tuesday in Denver District Court to challenge a school voucher plan adopted by the Douglas County School District.
Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado and the American Civil Liberties Union sued on behalf of a group of parents, clergy and other taxpayers who oppose the program's effort to divert taxpayer money to primarily religious, private schools, according to a press release from AU.

The letter details the results of the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado's investigation into how police and Keep Colorado Springs Beautiful volunteers conducted trash pickups amid homeless camps. Police requested the information from the ACLU as part of the internal investigation, police spokesman Lt. David Whitlock said.
