LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- General Motors, bailed out by U.S. taxpayers and still owned in part by the federal government, is stripping country of origin labels off of its cars at auto shows around the country, says the Made in the USA Foundation. The Made in the USA Foundation has charged GM with violating the American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA) which requires all new cars that are offered for sale to include country of origin information.
The AALA requires new cars to provide information on the window sticker, including where the car was assembled, the U.S. and other country content, where the engine was made and where the transmission was made.

Dear Car Fix: How can you find if a car is made in America? I would like to base my car-buying decision, in part, on the percentage of American content in the car. Is this information available? If so, how do I get it? -- H.M., Machias

The US motor vehicle industry has become more international and competitive over the last few decades. Domestic carmakers rely more on imported parts, foreign carmakers increasingly use parts that were produced in the US, and foreign parts companies have established production operations in North America. In such a context, the distinction between "American" and "foreign" vehicles has become blurred. The US federal government uses several approaches to determine the domestic content of vehicles sold in the US. All of them define "domestic" as a geographic concept, rather than strictly by nation of ownership. A carmaker's domestic content is measured both in relation to the models produced in the country of interest and in relation to all the models sold in that country. Against a backgr...
