Gov. Tom Corbett's proposal to slash funding for the state-owned and state-related universities by nearly half is "absolutely unprecedented" and could have far-reaching ramifications, a spokesman for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities said. Corbett's proposed budget reduces aid to the 14-university State System of Higher Education from $444 million this year to $232 million; funding for Penn State University would be reduced from $304 million to $152 million, while the University of Pittsburgh would see state support slashed from $160 million to $80 million.
