Al was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the adult Sunday school class. He was an active Mason, having been a Past Master of Washington Lafayette Masonic Lodge No. 176, a member of Portsmouth No. 100, Seaboard Masonic Lodge No. 56, Churchland Masonic Lodge No. 276, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, Knight Templar Portsmouth No. 5 Commandery, Port Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter No. 36, Khedive Shrine Temple. Al also was a member of the Norfolk Moose Lodge No. 39, the Carlisle Elk Lodge No. 578 and the Beazley Senior Center.
