The University of Pittsburgh is among dozens of academic institutions urging Congress to preserve government funding for research using human embryonic stem cells.
Leaders from the Association of American Medical Colleges, whose members include Pitt, worry that banning federal dollars for such research will threaten therapies to treat major illnesses such as cancer, Parkinson's disease and strokes. Some are scheduled to speak today to a Senate Appropriations health panel in Washington, although no Pitt officials will testify.

WEST VALLEY CITY -- The lead character in "The Game's Afoot," a comedy-thriller-mystery getting its regional premiere at Hale Centre Theatre, was a real-life "combination Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford," says playwright Ken Ludwig.
Although the play is fictional, William Gillette was a turn-of- the-century actor best known for playing Sherlock Holmes.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah was still a bit of a novelty the last time it played Pittsburgh. In fact, it was the only time. The Utes celebrated their status as the first BCS Busters and an unbeaten 2004 season with a 35-7 victory over the Panthers in the Fiesta Bowl. The BCS has been busted plenty in the years since, including another run by Utah in 2004, and the Utes are well enough established in college football that theyre actually favored over the higher-ranked Panthers in the season opener for both teams Thursday night. Weve been pointing to this game for a lot of months now, Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham said. Utah has won 17 straight at home and every ticket for Thursday night even standing room was gone by early in the week. Utah fans are anxious to begin the three- month farewell to...

Although he was unable to overcome two interceptions and two fumbles (one lost), Pitt quarterback Tino Sunseri was pleased with his performance in the Panthers' loss to Iowa.
I would say it was my best game I played yet," he said. "I was very pleased with all my reads. Even the interceptions were the right reads. I just have to put more air on the ball.

Although one is now flying off to Washington D.C. to play top- seeded Pitt and the other is tromping back home, its season done, there was one thing both the winners and the losers agreed on Tuesday night at UD Arena.
I'll tell you I couldn't be happier with the city of Dayton...how they treated us in 2003...and the way they treated us this trip here," University of UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach said after his Bulldogs edged Arkansas-Little Rock, 81-77, in overtime in the opening game of the NCAA First Four.

Sigh...that was then and this is now. Like [Charlton Heston]'s Moses escorting the Jews out of Egypt, this Holy Week will find thousands of moviegoers making multiplex pilgrimages to savor The Passion of the Christ (Newmarket; 127 minutes; R; widescreen; 2004), director Mel Gibson's heavy-handed, ultra-violent chronicle of Christ's final 12 hours. Some viewers will be on their umpteenth visit to Passion following its Ash Wednesday opening, while others will be first-timers who will corral their families to collectively share in the happening, although impressionable children shouldn't be allowed anywhere near this cinematic pew's Freddy Krueger-sized dose of skin-flailing mayhem. Yet given Passion's massive $330 million take at the box office thus far, Gibson's film will probably be vie...

QUARTERBACKS Nice matchup of two of the best Big East quarterbacks ... Cincys Zach Collaros has completed 147 of 232 passes for 1,790 yards and 14 touchdowns with eight interceptions. WVUs Geno Smith, however, has thrown five picks with 23 touchdowns and ranks first in the Big East in pass efficiency (152), passing yards per (347.2) and total offense (340.1). EDGE: Mountaineers
RUNNING BACKS Isaiah Pead is having a fine year at tailback for Cincinnati. Its not surprising, considering he broke two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffins rushing record at his high school, Eastmoor Academy. Hes averaging 102.6 rushing yards and had 118 last week against Pitt. West Virginia has no one that really compares, although Dustin Garrison is No. 6 in the Big East, averaging 64.6 yards. EDG...

Although Pitt has beaten Florida State in eight of nine meetings in the series, the Panthers have not fared well overall against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Entering today's game in Tallahassee, Fla., Pitt is 72-76 (48.6 percent) against the league's present lineup, including 0-5 against Georgia Tech, 1-9 against North Carolina State, 1-7 against North Carolina, 1-5 against Maryland and 3-7 against Virginia. The Panthers also own winning records against Clemson (1-0), Boston College (29-17), Virginia Tech (5-3) and Miami (17-16). They have never met Wake Forest.

When Pitt was in the planning stages of designing Petersen Events Center, it took a tour of Wisconsin's Kohl Center for inspiration.
It wasn't just because Pitt chancellor Mark Nordenberg is a graduate of Wisconsin Law School, although Pitt coach Jamie Dixon doesn't mind getting his digs in.

In these dangerously patriotic times, Troy is decidedly schizophrenic about whether war is a thrill or a folly. So how much modern politics we should read into it? There's a wise old father who goes to war only as a last resort, and a naive son who thinks that dying in battle is noble. From [Hector]: "The gods won't fight this war for us. This is not a conflict of nations. It's a conflict between two men." From Achilles: "Imagine a king who fights his own battles. Wouldn't that be a sight?" And then there's Odysseus, a good man who acquiesces to his vengeful king. If there's such a thing as reincarnation, Odysseus may be alive today in the body and soul (what remains of it) named Colin Powell.
[Brad Pitt]'s Achilles is an odd mix of elements: Sometimes just an alpha male (like a silver-...
